Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town

Only a few more days until Christmas! I just wanted to share a few shots with you from our Christmas decorating night earlier this month and show you what our holiday home has looked like lately. Putting up the tree with Sinatra singing and hot chocolate in hand is always one of my favorite nights of the year and hanging pretty ornaments under soft Christmas light is so cathartic for some magical reason.

I love the 60’s Corvette Stingray light-up sign that I made for the mantel this year—it turned out just how I pictured it in my head! I still use a lot of the holiday DIYs that I’ve made in past years too like my gold leather stockings, kitty paw stockings, and diamond ornaments so it’s like bringing out old friends to mix in with some new goodies.
The peppermint schnapps is just for Todd, so don’t freak out ok!! I got extra whipped cream though…Belly shot! Finally found a cool manger scene that matches my decor—it’s harder to find than you’d think! I went to Israel for almost a month to complete my Master of Theology back in 2011 and while it’s amusing to point out all the theological inaccuracies in classic American Christmas manger scenes (well, amusing to Theology nerds that is), the memories of seeing first century Jewish homes are always fresh in my mind as I picture the first Christmas night. We have Todd’s ornaments from when he was a kid but I usually hang them on the fridge or display them somewhere else since they don’t match the tree scheme. Feels a little exclusive but my Mom is the sweetest lady on earth and she did (and still does) the same thing to us with our ornaments! All the ones made of popsicle sticks had a different holiday home for the season…We usually get a fun holiday ornament at our A Beautiful Mess Christmas party each year and this time I got a pink drill and Todd received a monkey playing video games—both perfect choices! Christmas decor is such a bright spot for me in the middle of winter. Can I leave all this up until summer? PLEASE??signature2 copy

December Daily 2015!

This is my second year of doing the December Daily photo book challenge where you take and print photos of each day in December to create a special album of memories. This year’s book is a little simpler than last year’s, but I’m still glad that I decided to do one. This was our first Christmas season here in Nashville, but while it felt really different from last year, you’ll notice that there are still lots of similarities (brunches, kitties sleeping under the tree, Todd being on the road, etc). It is a TON of work that goes into making these kind of books, but I always think it’s worth it once it gets completed. And I got to feature a bunch of the photos I took with my new Instax camera (once I unwrapped it at Christmas)—so fun!! Have you ever done a “month/week in the life” book before?signature2

My New Year’s Eve Party!

Happy 2016 everyone! We had such a lovely Christmas in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA visiting with my family but we eventually had to hurry home to host a NYE eve weekend with some of our out-of-town college friends. It seems kind of tough to find a fancy New Year’s restaurant plan that wasn’t $150 a plate here in Nashville, so we did a dinner and game night here at our house instead. I wanted to do something special for the dining room decorations but only had a day to pull it all together so I made these gold mylar pom-poms and hung them from the ceiling over the table. I actually made that sequin “cheers” sign last year but I kept it around because I can use it for lots of different occasions. I borrowed some gold silverware and plates from my gal pal Elsie, added them a few of my other table settings, sprinkled some gold confetti and I was ready for guests to arrive!
As you can see from the Instax photos (I got a pink one for Christmas!) we had a total blast! We’ve started a New Year’s Eve tradition of getting together with this old college crew and this was our second year of making it happen (ok, technically the Larsons are honorary members, but they are pretty much official now). Already making plans for next NYE and we can’t wait! Hope you did something fun too!signature2

New Town + New Traditions!

I don’t think it totally hit me until the Christmas season that we are kind of past the point of being solely focused on unpacking boxes and can move on to a bit more of the “fun stuff” and enjoy a bit of the holiday season. Of course, Christmas is usually so tied with nostalgia that it’s much more cozy to settle back into old Christmas traditions than make new ones. But what if you are in a totally new town? Well, then you certainly don’t have the usual tradition options you may have had before! This year I’ve been doing a few of the old favorite like watching White Christmas and playing my favorite holiday songs, but we also have gone to a few Nashville Christmas events to branch out and find a few new holiday favorites too. They have a beautiful botanical garden here and they light up the grounds with Christmas lights so you can walk through at night while sipping boozy hot chocolate—we had so much fun and it’s totally something that I would love to do every year! I also made a new holiday drink (an egg nog martini) and some mulled wine that I think can be seasonal favorites for a few years to come.

Of course with all the holiday gatherings, it’s always my mission to have a holiday look that I really love, and this year I’ve been dying over this gold sequin romper from LuLu’s. No matter what holiday occasion you still need a look for (Christmas office party or swanky New Year’s Eve bash), you’ll find something to love at LuLu’s. I can’t wait to wear this look for New Years Eve in a few weeks! It’s a bit of an obsession but I always do a full sequin outfit if possible for NYE because, well, why not!! It’s the night to go big or go home, right? I also wore the jumper for our Christmas card photo so it’s immortalized forever in print as well.  Hope you get to wear something fun that you love this season—whether it’s full of sequins or not is up to you!!signature
